2020 has looked quite different for everyone—even for international sports stars like Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe. But that doesn’t mean they’ve just been at home twiddling their thumbs during a worldwide pandemic. They’ve actually been quite busy, as you can see from Symetra’s latest campaign featuring the duo from their home in Connecticut, showing them working from home, rearranging furniture, and even trying some new baking recipes. And luckily they have Symetra to help plan for their financial futures as well.

We worked with production company O Positive and director Jess Coulter to shoot remotely, literally handing the camera, audio equipment, props and lighting over to Sue and Megan, while the rest of us were back on the west coast (Seattle and Los Angeles respectively). So hats off to Sue and Megan for not only doing all the shooting and work “on set,” but also memorizing their lines and ACTING (remember, they’re world-class athletes, not necessarily trained actors)! The spots also premiered during the 2020 ESPY Awards which were hosted remotely by Sue, Megan and Russell Wilson, which made it all the more fitting.

Erath – An Oregon Original

Oregon is known for a lot of great things; the amazing Pacific Coastline, towering volcanoes of the Cascade Range, and every single episode of Portlandia. But you may not know it’s also one of the best places in the world to grow the fickle pinot noir grapes needed to make pinot noir wine—specifically in the famed Willamette Valley. It’s there in the Dundee Hills region where you’ll find Erath Winery, makers of Oregon’s No.1 selling pinot noir.

It was this fact we dove into head first. That Erath is the culmination of all the best things about Oregon’s culture, climate and soil coming together in a bottle of wine. And every time you open a bottle of Erath, you’re invited on a sensory excursion to Oregon, no matter where you happen to drink it. Which is why we dubbed it, “An Oregon Original.”

I’m a big fan of Oregon (and the Pacific Northwest in general), so this was personally a super fun campaign for me to work on. You don’t have to twist my arm to conceptualize what Oregon means, look through beautiful photos of Oregon landscapes and create a voice that captures the same essence. So hopefully that passion comes through in what you see here.

Congrats, Edgar!

It’s about time. If Edgar’s remarkable slash line of .312/.418/.515 and game changing career as a DH didn’t get him into the Baseball Hall of Fame, then the fact he’s the nicest man in the world should have sealed the deal. Luckily, it finally came together and he will forever be enshrined in Cooperstown. For Andrew Gall and I, it was an honor to once again help create another congrats ad for the Seattle Mariners for another generational player such as Edgar Martinez. So who’s next? I’m looking at you, Ichiro!

Premera Blue Cross Post-It Note Mozaic

Whenever you can take an assignment and make something more out of it is a win in my book. Either way you’re going to put a lot of work, time and money into something, so why not go above and beyond in some way. 

That was our goal when Premera Blue Cross, Washington State’s largest health insurer, asked us to help inspire their employees to bring their ideas and open minds into work each day. So we came up with a bunch of fun stuff we implemented, but one piece I’m especially proud of is an entrance design to inspire employees immediately as they walk into the office. And Communication Arts thought so too, including it into their Typography Annual, which is always a special honor.

Thanks For Everything, Junior

It’s not very often you get to make an ad from an entire organization—but also on the behalf of a city, fan base and perhaps even an entire league—about a transendent, Hall of Fame player like Ken Griffey Jr.

Yes, it’s just an “ad,” but it’s also a love letter. It’s also something that the player it’s about, who inspired an entire generation of athletes, is going to read himself. And autograph. And that the organization will frame and present it to you and the agency. 

So yeah, it might just be an ad, but it’s also more than that. And it was a pretty cool experience having a hand in that.

Goodwill x KEXP Sustainable Sounds Concert

To celebrate Earth Day, Seattle Goodwill teamed up with KEXP to put on a concert with local bands Ivan & Alyosha and Lemolo to help raise awareness about how donating to Goodwill can help keep more clothing, books and other household items out of landfills.

Research showed the average person throws away 70 lbs. of clothing every year. So along with the Sustainable Sounds concert, we also partnered with local Seattle influencers to promote #Give1Pound to help reduce clothing waste in landfills—so we asked them to just Give1Pound of donations to Goodwill.

Seattle Mariners 2016 Player Commercials

Last week, the new Mariners player commercials made their debut, and they turned out as fun as it was to help make them. We found out that Nelson Cruz has his own side-hustle (which seems pretty conveniently tied to his main-hustle), as well as discover a new image for Kyle Seager, one of the leagues most consistent, hardworking veteran players. Plus, we get see some new players getting to know the personal details of King Felix Hernandez, and reveal that Robinson Canó bares a striking resemblance to another Mariner great.

WSU125 CA Typography Annual

The massive WSU 125 we created for Washington State University to commemorate all of their incredible academic achievements over the past 125 years looks as good in print as it does in real life. A big thanks to goes out to Communication Arts and the judges for selecting the WSU 125 into the Typography Annual 6. It's an honor to be listed along many other amazing pieces of typographic beauty. Fat Cats on Door Mats

Happy Halloween

Last October on a hike to Minotaur Lake we climbed over a small group of rocks to find a lakeside lunch spot only to look down and find this young buck not doing so well.

Although, it was really confusing as to why a seemingly healthy young deer would be floating dead in the water. It didn't make sense. Later, hiking around the lake, we found a large bird torn to pieces and some mystery poop with fur in it nearby. So this was the scenario we put together; the deer ran into the lake as a means to escape a mountain lion. But if you've ever been to Minotaur Lake, the back half is steep rock, one side rises up to 6,376' Labyrinth Mtn, the other drops down 500' to Theseus Lake below. Which leaves the shoreline along the front half easily accessible, by say, a speedy mountain lion looking for a meal. The trapped deer never conceded defeat to the mountain lion, instead chose to tread the frigid waters until he could no longer swim.

Fall Has Fallen

In honor of the first day of fall, here's an old photo I took along the Superior Hiking Trail in 2003 as Lucas Will and I were doing the year end trail maintenance on a section near Silver Bay, MN.

For some reason this shot always stuck out in my memory, even 12 years later. Must be the crazy fall colors on that blue Minnesota sky!

NPS Turns 99

Happy 99th Birthday to our National Park Service—arguably our country's second best idea. Someone has to look after and care for these special places and those who call those special places home, like this Black Tailed Deer in Olympic Nat'l Park.

Felix's 2000th Strikeouts

A huge congrats to King Felix Hernandez on reaching 2000 strikeouts today, becoming the fourth youngest pitcher ever to do so in MLB history.  And he did it on Mother's Day, in front of a hot pink clad King’s Court, just to make it that much more interesting during a 4-3 win over the Oakland A's.

Anyway, this was a little thing I made for the @copacino IG and Twitter feed to announce Felix's new milestone. 

14 Hands: Where Great Times are Made

14 Hands isn’t your run-of-the-mill wine made from your average vineyard. It’s different. They go beyond the norm. Where other’s just stick to water and sun to grow their grapes, 14 Hands does that, but also adds a little something extra. Perhaps it’s some extra excitement, or a little extra fun.
